Biographical Sketch of Mark A. Belnick

Mark Belnick's one of America's most distinguished attorneys. From 1998 to 2002, Mr. Belnick served as Executive Vice President and Chief Corporate Counsel of Tyco International, Ltd. Prior to then, he was a senior litigation partner for 20 years at the prestigious international law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind Wharton & Garrison, based in New York City.

Mr. Belnick was Michael Milken's lead attorney in the 380+ civil litigations brought against Mr. Milken in the 90's. Mr. Belnick served as a chief negotiator of the complex settlement that resolved those massive litigations without trials. He also won the only civil litigation against Mr. Milken to go to final judgment.

In 1997, Mr. Belnick represented Smith Barney in the largest nationwide sexual harassment class action ever brought. He devised and negotiated the innovative settlement resolving that class action, which was hailed, not only by his client, but by leading civil rights groups, and which had a dramatic impact on the way sexual harassment and discrimination claims are handled on Wall Street today. He also represented American Express Co. successfully in a federal class action making civil fraud and RICO charges; and won a treble damage antitrust jury case for The Coca Cola Company against Pepsi's largest bottler. Mr. Belnick was also a principal architect of Pennzoil's $13 billion judgment against Texaco in the fight for Getty Oil Company.

In 1987, Mr. Belnick took a one-year leave from Paul Weiss, when he was named Deputy Chief Counsel of the U.S. Senate Iran-Contra Investigation. He interrogated several key witnesses in that internationally-televised investigation, including Secretary of State George Shultz, Assistant Secretary of State Elliot Abrams, Fawn Hall, Ambassador Lewis Tamb, and others. He was a principal author of the Joint Senate/House Congressional Report on the Iran-Contra Investigation.

In 1995, Mr. Belnick served as Chief Counsel to a Select Committee of senior Wall Street statesman established by the SEC to investigate widespread adverse allegations concerning the enforcement, performance and structure of the NASD and the Nasdaq stock market. After a thorough investigation, and under Mr. Belnick's guidance, the Select Committee recommended a massive, top-to-bottom restructuring of the NASD and the Nasdaq. All of the Committee's recommendations were approved by the SEC and the NASD, and have been in effect since.

Mr. Belnick received the A.B. degree from Cornell University, cum laude in Government, in 1968. In 1971, he received the J.D. Degree from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Mr. Belnick serves on the Board of Visitors of Columbia Law School, the Board of Trustees of Thomas Aquinas College, the Board of Directors of the Legal Aid Society, the Cornell University Council, and the Advisory Council  of Cornell University's College of Arts & Sciences. He was also the founding Director of, and Principal Instructor in, Cornell University's Pre-Law Program, with the rank of Visiting Professor of Government from 1999-2005. In 1994, Mr. Belnick was elected as a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers. He is listed in "Who's Who in American Law."
